The 8 Parts of Speech - Classroom Posters

Parts of Speech Posters.PNG

I must admit that as a student I never really understood the difference between nouns, adverbs, interjections and the other parts of speech all that well.

Then when I went to university I almost convinced myself that they were an area of superfluous knowledge when I succeeded at a tertiary level with little to no knowledge of them

As a teacher though. I was quickly found out when trying to give my students the tools and language to make their writing more mature and appealing to specific audiences.

To address this I have spent quite a bit of time brushing up my own knowledge on the 8 parts of common speech.

  • Nouns
  • Verbs
  • Pronouns
  • Adjectives
  • Prepositions
  • Conjunctions
  • Interjections
  • Adverbs

To remind me of this I have made 9 posters to share with anyone who wants them that outline the purpose, example words and sentences for each of the 8 areas.

Click here to download them and enjoy.

Free Classroom Poster: Parts of a Paragraph

Parts-of-a-paragraph-poster2.JPG

It is often said that writing a paragraph correctly is like making a hamburger.  The two buns contain a collection of tasty but different ingredients that keep us coming back for more.

This analogy is a good one for students to understand as the correct way to structure a paragraph is as follows.

1)topic sentence: tells the reader what the paragraph is going to be about

2)the body: the main part of the paragraph. This is where you tell the reader about your topic by including specific details.

3)The closing or clincher sentence: comes after all the details havebeen included in the body of the paragraph. The closing sentence remindsthe reader what the topic of the paragraph is really all about, what itmeans.

This poster will come in handy in any classroom as it very simply outlines these facts in a great visual manner using the hamburger visual to help them remember these facts.

FREE CLASSROOM POSTER: VOWELS

vowels-poster.PNG

You'd be surprised how many children, and adults too, you can stump when you ask the seemingly simple question, "What are vowel sounds?" You'll get quite a few variants of "a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y" from them, but after that it's a real mishmash of answers. Many of my students, and many of their parents either, actually knew what the main difference is between vowel sounds and consonant sounds.

This poster is an other resource for teachers to direct students as to what a vowel is and more importantly what is it's purpose.

THE FIRST 100 & 200 MOST COMMONLY USED WORDS CHARTS.

1st100-bold.JPG

High frequency words are quite simply those words which occur most frequently in written material.  For example, "and", "the", "as" and "it".

They are often words that have little meaning on their own, but they do contribute a great deal to the meaning of a sentence.

Some of the high frequency words can be sounded out using basic phonic rules, e.g. "it" is an easy word to read using phonics. However, many of the high frequency words are not phonically regular and are therefore hard to read in the early stages.

These words are sometimes called tricky words, sight words or camera words. In addition to being difficult to sound out, most of the high frequency words have a rather abstract meaning which is hard to explain to a child.
